BindiMaps, a start-up specialising in indoor navigation for the vision-impaired, has secured Australia Post as a major client, deploying its innovative mapping technology in Melbourne and Sydney stores.
Founded by Anna Wright, who began losing her sight due to a rare retinal condition, BindiMaps uses a phone’s camera to capture images that are then analysed to update the user’s location with high accuracy.
The company’s new system is significantly more precise than Google Maps, offering real-time indoor navigation with an accuracy of about 30cm. BindiMaps’ technology has also gained popularity among those without vision impairment, with app downloads rising by 50% in the past year.
Australia Post is testing the technology as part of its commitment to innovation and inclusivity. BindiMaps operates on a subscription model and also offers an analytics program for developers and retailers.
