Australia’s HB11 joins fusion race as US-China competition heats up

HB11 Energy, an Australian company based in Sydney, is making strides in the global race for sustainable fusion energy, positioning itself to revolutionize power generation with its laser-driven fusion technology. Unlike conventional nuclear fission, fusion energy combines lighter atomic nuclei to create heavier ones, offering a clean, carbon-free energy source with no long-lived radioactive waste. The US has poured significant resources into fusion research, with government-private collaborations driving forward innovation. HB11 recently secured a US$10 million project to tackle challenges in laser fusion technology, focusing on using high-intensity lasers to initiate fusion reactions between hydrogen and boron-1. This method addresses the concerns of radioactive waste and fuel proliferation tied to traditional fusion technologies.

The US-China race in fusion energy is intensifying, with China launching the world’s largest laser fusion facility. While Australia’s fusion energy efforts lag behind, HB11 aims to bridge the gap by securing funding for advanced lasers and fuel targets. McKenzie highlighted that Australia’s venture capital sector has been less supportive compared to the US, but the company remains optimistic about driving Australia’s involvement in the trillion-dollar fusion energy industry. HB11 is actively engaged in discussions with US fusion players to help shape the future of fusion energy.
